Food

The family-friendly, wood-fired Flammkuchen are deliciously thin and very popular judging from the volume exiting the kitchen. The charcuterie platter and cheese board (for sharing) are perfect as a lighter meal with a wine tasting. Although the goulash is a signature dish, it was not recommended on the day. The portions are not generous, the presentation of the food is adequate and the flavours are as expected with no stand-outs. This is a restaurant for celebrating a beautiful day outside in the open, or with family and friends where every taste is catered for. The star of the show is the view.

Two salads. The roasted beetroot, goats cheese, lettuce and walnuts (served with honey balsamic reduction) looked good. Various Flammkuchen (the Classic offers a choice of Alpine bacon or artichokes, chreme fraiche, leeks, red onions and chives). There are two soups on offer, French Onion with Gruyere Toast or Roasted Pumpkin & Ginger (or you can order them with Goulash as a soup trio).

Traditional Rindsgulasch, a beef goulash served with spatzle. Vegan mushroom sliders and a vegetarian mushroom and truffle pasta dish. There are  three fish offerings (the smoked trout is lovely, served on large, crispy potato rosti with a generous dollop of creme fraiche). The cheese beef burger on brioche bun, beef fillet on potato rosti and slow-roasted lamb shank will satisfy the meat lovers.

Desserts range from crowd-pleasing Chocolate Fondant to Malva Pudding and Creme Brulee. With smaller offerings of ice-creams and classics of affogato and Don Pedros.

Drinks

Understandably only Constantia Glen wines are listed. From an MCC and Rose to top end Syrahs and classic Sauvignon Blancs. There are several red and white blends and three wine families for price variety, with wine tasting offerings ranging from the flagships wines to only sauvignon

No cocktails or signature drinks, a purely standard drink offering of sparkling cool drinks like Appletizer and Grapetizer. Upon seating you are offered still water, sparkling water or a jug of iced water.

Service

The restaurant takes online bookings but leaves openings to accommodate walk-ins and wine-tastings – a good tip for Capetonians who are notorious for last-minute plans to take advantage of good weather.

The service is quick and professional but not particularly personal. You get the sense there is a fair amount of churn with many coming just for the wine tasting and wine buying. Also there were quite a few large family/friend gatherings so the sense you get is they want to get the orders in and the food out as quickly as possible.

Ambience

Busy with lots of tables spilling out onto large open terraces and a pleasant courtyard, although the inside restaurant seating is always full. Crowd is mostly family with lots of tourists. The views are the star of the show, inside or outside.
