Where to find fresh, hot waffles in Pretoria

Whether you like to drizzle your “soft serve” waffle with colourful, flavoured syrups, or prefer yours flambéed with rum and a generous helping of the silkiest Chantilly cream, let the list below guide you to discovering some of the capital’s most delicious waffles.

Aroma Gelato and Waffle Lounge (Hillcrest)

The team at Aroma prides itself on having perfected their Belgian waffle batter. They produce a pillowy waffle that’s crispy on the outside and cake-like and soft inside. This, coupled with their amazing gelato, is a winning combination. A plain waffle is available at R50, you’ll pay R82 for a waffle with one scoop of premium gelato, and R115 for a waffle with two scoops.

Melt Ice Cream Bar (Brooklyn)

Prepare to be surprised by this popular ice cream bar’s Waffle Fries. Think golden, crispy, light waffle fingers that can be dipped into soft serve ice cream. Choose between various options such as traditional golden syrup, Bar One, Milky Bar or Peppermint Crisp flavours. These treats can be enjoyed for around R60. Why not make a feast of it and order a platter for four? Four soft serve servings, fruit salad, waffle fries and syrup for R220.

Stephnie’s Restaurant (Lynnwood Bridge)

Visit Stephnie’s for a taste of their enchanting waffle selection – the Belgian waffle is a popular treat. You can enjoy it in one of three flavour profiles: vanilla, chocolate or strawberry for R82. If you’re in the mood for something more decadent, try the caramel, banana and pecan nut waffle. This offering brings together the sweet and sticky richness of caramelised banana with the comforting familiarity of creamy vanilla ice cream, covered in caramel sauce with a delectable sprinkling of crunchy, roasted pecan nuts. A truly winning combo at just R88.

Coffee on 18th (Rietondale)

It’s always more fun to enjoy a waffle in the company of someone special. This quaint neighborhood coffee shop offers excellent value for money. A waffle with ice cream or cream is only R50. But it is on Wednesdays that the magic truly unfolds! The Wednesday Waffle special offers two waffles for the price of one! Value like this is hard to find.

Jam and Daisies (Muckleneuk)

A jewel of a coffee spot in the centre of the old East. Here, you can enjoy sweet or savoury waffles or even experience a waffle buffet. The flavours and presentation will knock your socks off. One of their tastiest and prettiest offerings pairs the tartness of a warm berry compote with the velvety texture of mascarpone and flaked almonds for R90. Also try the peach, honey and cinnamon topping with mascarpone for the same price. In a pinch, vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce is a reliable and trusted staple worth revisiting.

Krema (Faerie Glen)

At this brilliant little ice cream shop you can customise your own waffle starting at just R40 for a plain waffle. A portion of Nutella can be added for R18, one scoop of ice cream for R32, or if two scoops for R58.

Royal Danish (Colbyn)

Colbyn Village is being transformed into a funky new restaurant and business precinct. The developers have stripped, reimagined and transformed this node into a trendy new entertainment district. Watch this space for exciting new trends to come.

The Royal Danish Gelato Shop has been a drawcard for this niche precinct for many years. With the redevelopment, there is a new buzz and excitement in the air at Royal Danish, too. At peak times, a small queue can form.

The Danish Gold Waffle (R72) is the standard bearer of waffle deliciousness. You get a plain golden waffle, two scoops of gelato and golden syrup. Add chocolate or caramel sauce for an extra R17.

You can also indulge in the pecan nut waffle for R84, which is studded with butter-roasted pecan nuts and served with two   scoops of gelato and extra sprinklings of pecans on top. What a treat!
