“At Nederburg, we don’t settle. We persevere, innovate and keep pushing on.” That’s according to the popular Paarl cellar’s winemaker, Samuel Viljoen, who’s been involved in the making of its award-winning reds for more than a decade. His comment refers to last year’s opening of a revamped restaurant at Nederburg amongst other recent changes.
Never content to rest on its laurels, Nederburg (established in 1791), comprises a cutting-edge winery surrounded by an expanse of fine vineyards. A premier destination for day visitors as well as conferences, events and workshops, it incorporates the historic manor, hugged by tended gardens and shaded by ancient trees. This physical serenity, however, belies an unwavering focus grounded in heritage, attuned for innovation.
Constituting the core visitor attraction, the crown jewel alongside the sophisticated winery is Nederburg’s stately manor house. Its interior spaces have been beautifully revamped and modernised. Here, in the elegant surrounds of this magnificent historically significant building erected in 1800, is where wine tastings (including award winners such as Nederburg Private Bin Two Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon 2017, awarded five stars in the 2021 edition of Platter’s South African Wine Guide, as well as some superb older vintages from the wine library), wine and food experiences, and intimate events are now presented. Named “The Manor”, the refreshed restaurant’s focus is on authentic, nostalgic food experiences featuring simple and unassuming, yet wholesome and hearty dishes with a touch of heritage.
Generous picnics for relaxed enjoyment in the sprawling gardens are also on offer, as are breakfasts, an ever-changing menu of light lunches and superb cheese and charcuterie platters. The bar serves up alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions of your favourite classic cocktails as well as some of the best coffee and hot chocolate in the Cape winelands.
Small-scale conferences and meetings can now make use of new meeting rooms on the first floor of The Manor. These spaces could also be used for pre-booked private lunches or dinners, or intimate special events.
