Oxalis Eatery pop up opens in Cape Town’s Wale Street

The restaurant industry has been through an incredibly tough few months, so it’s always encouraging to see new openings. One such is Oxalis Eatery, the brainchild of chef Liezl Odendaal, formerly of the now-closed Janse & Co in Kloof Street and her team of collaborators.

Everyone on the team behind Oxalis has all worked together previously. “We all have a passion for the hospitality industry that includes food, wine and people,” says Liezl. The menu, which will change according to seasonality, is divided into snacks and plates, with the addition of sides and dessert. Liezl and her fellow chefs are cooking up dishes like smoked snoek croquettes, chicken liver parfait, a Wagyu burger, tempura prawns and oxalis fried baby chicken with corn and pickled pepper slaaitjie. The drinks menu currently features a concise selection of wines and beers with a few homemade cordials. Notably, chef Arno Janse van Rensburg won’t be joining the new venture.

The new spot is a comfortable and casual space where locals can pop in for a glass of wine and snacks any time during the day. You’ll find it at 64A Wale street, above Honest Chocolate and next to The Gin Bar.

The name Oxalis comes from the scientific name for wood sorrel, an edible indigenous plant that has a fresh sour taste. “The plant is known to be resistant. It is currently flowering season for oxalis, so you will see them popping up everywhere with beautiful yellow flowers. We chose it because we can relate to it at this moment the flowers popping up everywhere like our pop-up eatery,” says Liezl.

Oxalis is open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 12pm to 9.30pm (closing time set to change once the national curfew has been lifted). On Sundays the team will be pouring mimosas and bloody Marys from 10am to 4pm.
