Where to have a Mexican feast in South Africa

Hola, amigos! Have you been missing your weekly indulgence of tacos, tortillas, tostadas or tamales washed down with tequila? Well, while tequila may be off the list temporarily, you can still savour your burritos, nachos, enchiladas, fajitas and quesadillas with generous lashings of salsa and guacamole from your favourite restaurants – all in the comfort of your own home. Johannesburg

El Jalapeño (Randburg)

El Jalapeño’s Denis Cardenas brought South American recipes to South Africa and the four-year-old restaurant continues to serve its well-loved nachos, burritos, poppers, quesadillas and churros. Enjoy at the restaurant or through take-away or delivery, with a 40% discount every Thursday.

CHIAPAS eat Mexican (Rosebank)

CHIAPAS eat Mexican is known for its healthy, halaal Mexican fare with a build-your-own-style menu that allows you to choose any base – from burritos to salads and tacos – paired with fillings of your choice. The Rosebank restaurant is currently open for dine-in, delivery and take-away.

Opening times: Tuesdays to Thursdays (10.30am to 8.30pm); Fridays and Saturdays (10.30am to 9.30pm); and Sundays and Mondays (10.30am to 8pm).

La Rosa Mexican Grille (Montecasino)

Home to authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex fare – including burritos, tacos, fajitas, enchiladas and nachos – La Rosa Mexican Grille is a three-year-old eatery owned by Costas Yianoulakis. Currently open for dine-in as well as take-away or delivery, the regular menu has been slightly reduced due to the lockdown, although all the popular items are still available.

Opening times: 12pm to 8pm, seven days a week.

Mama Mexicana (Maboneng)

Established in 2013, Maboneng-based Mama Mexicana has been delighting patrons for years with authentic Mexican fare, including favourites like tacos, nachos and burritos. Apart from delicious food, the eatery’s popularity stems from its laidback homely vibe, which can still be enjoyed when you dine-in; although you can also opt for take-away or delivery.

Opening times: Mondays to Wednesdays (9am to 5pm); Thursdays to Saturdays (10am to 8pm); and Sundays (10am to 7pm).

Mexican Fresh (Blairgowrie, Bryanston, Fourways, Morningside)

Owned by Liron Gilhar, Mexican Fresh has been serving quality Tex-Mex cuisine for over a decade. Strictly for take-away or delivery, you can enjoy their famous quesadillas, tacos, chimichangas and pizza. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, indulge in their signature Grande Burrito comprising steak strips, fresh guacamole, chunky salsa, cheese and French fries, drizzled with home-made salsa verde and served in a toasted tortilla.

A popular Mexican fast-food chain with over 100 franchise outlets in South Africa, Mochachos has been dishing out unique Mexican-inspired cuisine for over two decades. Currently, all its outlets in Johannesburg are open for dine-in, take-away and delivery. Apart from delectable Mexican fare incorporating the unique Mochachos dry spice, the chain also offers popular items like schwarmas, BBQ chicken wings, oversized burgers and family share meals.

Pablo’s Mexican Cantina (Benoni)

Established in 2013 by Ivan Ivanov, Pablo’s Mexican Cantina is known for its pizzas and ribs, as well as Mexican staples like burritos and polo queso. Open for dine-in as well as delivery and take-away, the restaurant is currently running special offers like two large pizzas for R179.90 and ‘La Familia Combos’ priced at R299.

Perron (Bryanston)

This popular Mexican tapas restaurant – known for its classics like jalapeño poppers, spinach empanadas, steak tacos, mushroom quesadillas and churros – is open for dine-in, take-away and delivery. The restaurant is currently running Vegan Monday and Taco Tuesday specials, which change on a weekly basis. You can also enjoy a two-for-one deal on the Mexican-inspired slow-braised pork belly.

Opening times: Mondays to Saturdays (12pm to 7pm) and Sundays (12pm to 4pm).

Supporting sustainable farming, the restaurant serves grass-fed beef and free-range chicken.

Cape Town

El Burro (Green Point)

Locals continue to flock here despite the pandemic. But if you don’t want to venture out just yet, visit the El Burro website to order all your Mexican favourites. The taco, burrito and Texan nacho boxes have proven to be a big hit.

The Fat Cactus (Gardens)

This neighbourhood gem offers classics like chilli poppers and cowboy nachos, but you can also get the family involved in making dinner by ordering one of their boxes. Sadly, their iconic jugs of frozen margaritas are off the menu right now, but keep an eye out for their Party Box once the alcohol ban has lifted.

El Barrio (Eden on the Bay)

You may not be able to enjoy the view or the colourful décor if you order for delivery, but you’ll still get top-rated tacos. El Barrio’s fresh ceviche and guacamole are delicious to start, and you could end with churros con chocolate caliente or flan de caramelo.

Peppa Jack’s Tex-Mex Grill & Bar (Durbanville)
