Where to get great waffles in Joburg

We’ve rounded up Jozi’s greatest waffles to satisfy everyone from the waffle purists to those who like them piled high with gelato, Nutella, nuts, Oreo crumbs and everything in between.

Craft (Parkhurst)

Though Craft may be best known for its freaskshakes, it also makes outrageous buttermilk waffles for breakfast. The buttermilk-and-sweetcorn waffle Benedicts come topped with poached eggs and grapefruit-infused hollandaise. You can also add your choice of pulled pork, smoked salmon or exotic mushrooms. If you’re looking for something sweet, the fig and brie waffle with almonds and whipped cream, and the Nutella waffle with caramelised banana and white chocolate are favourites.

BBQ Workshop (Rivonia Village) ?

This spot is known for its signature ‘vaflaki’: twelve freshly baked mini light and crispy waffles sprinkled with various toppings. The white chocolate Oreo vaflaki are delectable, but the vaflaki mix thrill takes the cake – chocolate praline with white chocolate, fresh strawberries, fresh cream, vanilla gelato, Ferrero Rocher gelato and maple syrup.

Fab Café and Gelato (Linden)

This cute café and ice-cream parlour in Linden has the most exquisite display of artisanal Italian gelato in town – and, along with it, delicious Belgian waffles. You can get them served plain with syrup; with syrup, whipped cream and toasted almonds; or with a scoop of amazing gelato. Think red velvet, white chocolate and pear, and cotton candy. If you’re looking for something savoury, opt for the breakfast waffle with cheese, spicy tomato, poached egg and ham.

Lexi’s Healthy Eatery (Sandton)

If you’re looking for something gluten-free and vegan on the waffle front then Lexi’s Healthy Eatery is the place to go: here you’ll find gluten- and refined sugar-free vanilla waffles served with fresh strawberries, coconut cream and vegan Nutella.

Melt (Bryanston)

Melt is a quaint and inviting chocolaterie and coffee shop in the Nicolway Shopping Centre that also makes great waffles. The choice is simple: a crispy thin waffle with syrup, or the signature Belgian waffle dusted in icing sugar and smeared thick with melted dark Belgian chocolate and strawberries, plus a range of other dangerous sweet treats to add if you please.

Moody Cow (Clearwater Mall)

The motto here is “Who says you can’t have waffles for breakfast, lunch and dinner?”. Every kind of waffle imaginable is available here, including classic Belgian-style waffles, waffle cones, waffle tacos, bubble waffles, Eskimo pies (wafer-thin waffles layered with gelato) and even waffle truffles (maple syrup-drenched waffle balls rolled in cocoa and chocolate, and served with gelato). The tart waffle is topped with milk-tart gelato, cinnamon-macerated apple, cinnamon dust, Milky Bar drizzle and Nutty Crust cookies. Yum.

Rather Tart (Sandton)

What started as a popular market stall is now a vibrant shop in the Morningview Shopping Centre. This halaal waffle house and crêperie serves up the crispiest, fluffiest Belgian and Liège waffles. On offer you’ll find a selection of sweets and savouries, including the American waffle: smoked lamb bits are mixed into the waffle batter before it’s crisped to perfection and topped with maple syrup. Or try the smoked lamb, cheddar cheese and spring onion waffle. The most popular sweet waffles are the strawberry waffle and the decadent waffle, with roasted mixed nuts, banana, ice cream and caramel.

Paoletto (Edenvale)

Paoletto serves up gorgeous old-fashioned, crisp and fluffy Belgian waffles. Savoury combinations include ham, cheese and mushroom; mild chicken curry with sambals; banana and chutney; and even a bolognese waffle. Sweet versions include a banana-caramel waffle, fresh strawberries with Italian gelato, and Dutch apple and cinnamon.

Sticky Waffle (Bryanston)

As the name suggests, this is a waffle house sepcialising in the delicious and fluffy delights, with a range of gluten-free and vegan options available. (Plus great coffee and milkshakes.) You need to try the loaded waffles: toasted waffle sandwiches filled with delicious treats like chicken and cheese with chilli sauce. Or try the original sticky waffle simply served with maple syrup, or their seriously jacked waffles with blueberries or chocolate chips mixed into the waffle batter.

That Spot on 4th (Parktown North)

They make insanely good sweet and savoury waffles, as well as a range of gluten-free ones. The ‘hangover cure’ waffle comes topped with chorizo, caramelised onions, mozzarella cheese, roasted rosa tomatoes and a fried egg. On the sweet side you’ll find French toast waffles served with a mixed berry compote and crème fraiche, as well as spicy homemade gingerbread waffles served with vanilla ice cream.

Von Pickartz (Newtown)

The traditional Liège waffles here are made from a 170-year-old secret family recipe, and moreish Dutch stroopwafels are available too. The original Belgian is dusted simply with icing sugar, but to accommodate our South African sense of flair, they offer fresh strawberries and cream; salted caramel; Nutella; seasonal fruit, and the very popular butter and fresh cream. If you’re looking for something a little zanier, add Turkish delight, nougat and honeycomb.
