6 must-try cheesy dishes in Durban

Want to know where to find the cheesiest dishes in Durban? We rounded up our favourites.

Butcher Boys (Florida Road)

Mostly known for steak, Butcher Boys knows a thing or two about a good burger and the gourmet burger options have cheese-lovers drooling. Go for the Argentinian if you prefer a dash of international flavour with your cheese – a 200g freshly ground beef patty is topped with bacon and loads of grated cheddar, then finished off with lashings of chimichurri butter. Or, for an elbow-licking-good experience, try the Royale topped with bacon, fresh chilli and a creamy cheese-and-mushroom sauce.

Dropkick Murphy’s (Florida Road)

This lively venue puts a modern twist on the classic Irish bar and it’s renowned for its great atmosphere, flowing drinks and delicious food. Your cheesy fantasies will all come true with the options available on the pub menu. Loaded potato skins are topped with bacon and smothered with cheese; mini cheese griller hotdogs are battered and served with sweet chilli; and deep-fried mozzarella sticks are a gooey triumph. But it’s the rich cheddar mac-and-cheese balls, crusted with breadcrumbs and parmesan, that steal the show.

Pintxada (Umhlanga Village)

This classic tapas bar invites you to select an assortment of sharing plates – it’s your choice whether to share or not. Oozy arancini balls are stuffed with mozzarella and mushrooms with a zing of citrus. Vegetarians will love the crisp pastry camembert-and-fig tart served with caramelised onions, mushrooms and a swirl of balsamic reduction.

Lupa (Florida Road)

You’ll find cheesy dishes galore at this Italian restaurant, but it’s the ceremony of one particular dish that takes it to the next level. The mushroom carbonara (best enjoyed with the homemade spaghetti or tagliatelle) is accompanied by a large wheel of parmesan. The hot pasta, laced with truffle bacon, is spooned into the wheel, resulting in a an unctuous celebration of cheesy heaven. The parmesan fries are also particularly moreish.

Surf Riders Café (Erskine Terrace, Marine Parade)

This is one of the best views in Durban and it has great food to match, plus an awesome vibe. Watch the waves while you chow down on a cheesy camemburger – a beef patty topped with camembert, balsamic jam and berry relish. Or make a meal of the cheese fries, which come smothered in a special highly addictive creamy cheese sauce. You could also opt for the sweet-potato fries, which drip with the same cheese sauce sensation.

Unity (Silverton Road)

Satisfy your ‘smelly’ cheese craving with the creamy gorgonzola, rocket and onion marmalade beef burger served on a sesame bun. Want something even more decadent? Go for the blue cheese, roast tomato and rocket grilled steak sandwich and wash down it all down with the locally brewed That Blonde draught.
