Is this the prettiest pairing in the Winelands?

A wine farm in the Durbanville Wine Valley has come up with a pairing of bubblies and macarons, and we’re here for it.

Yes, pairings of wine with bacon, nougat, cupcakes and ice cream already exist (thanks be to the grape gods), but this sounds like a worthy addition to the oeuvre.

Macaron and MCC pairing at Canto

The team at Canto Boutique Winery, which opened in Durbanville in January, offers a tasting of four MCCs, each paired with a dainty macaron. The Chardonnay MCC Brut has been matched with a hazelnut macaron to deliver buttery and earthy flavours, while the raspberry and spicy flavours of the Shiraz Rose MCC Brut are complemented by a red-velvet macaron. In the third of the four pairings, a salted-caramel macaron is paired with the Canto Chardonnay/Pinot Noir MCC Brut for a sweet and savoury combo. The most popular is reportedly the Pinot Noir MCC Brut served with a Turkish Delight macaron, which has delicate rosewater/muscat flavours to complement the delicate strawberry flavours of the bubbly.

To balance all this sweetness, the winery has a deli where guests can build platters of cheeses, charcuterie, crackers and relishes. In addition to the MCC range above, the Canto range also includes an unwooded chardonnay, a merlot and a sauvignon blanc.

Canto Boutique Winery is open for tastings from Tuesday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and Saturday from 10am to 3pm. Standard wine tastings are R55 a person and the MCC and macaron pairing goes for R95 a person. In summer, picnic hampers will be available to enjoy on the lawn.
