As if the city didn’t already have enough takeaway options, Cape Town now has a dedicated kitchen that produces delivery-only gourmet curries. Meet The Curry Club.

Made with an ayurvedic blend of spices, the flagship dishes on the quirky menu include The Mighty Madras (lamb with curry leaf, black mustard seeds and cashew nuts in tomato gravy), Bangain Mirchi Ka Salan (aubergines in a gravy of curry leaf, coconut and mustard seeds), The Gunpowder chicken and The Gunpowder lamb aloo (roasted cumin, cinnamon and potatoes in a slow-roasted chilli-and-tomato base), Sunshine Dal (yellow lentils with garlic and jeera sauce), lamb rogan josh, and butter chicken. The samoosas are a signature, too. Bhajis and a couple of desserts complete the menu.

Offering a mix of old family recipes and more modern British curries (like tikka masala), the club’s take on Indian cuisine is dubbed ‘London-style Punjabi’. The Curry Club team explains: “The Indian restaurants pouring into London in the 50s had their menus adapted to suit a more ‘European’ taste, resulting in a new wave of beautiful Punjabi-London dishes that didn’t exist before then.”

The aromatic dishes are cooked up by a brigade of chefs from Delhi. They’re headed up by Mr Singh, the chief saucier who reportedly has a beautiful singing voice – and who prefers to be known by this mysterious moniker. The business was founded by Andrew Florenca and Will Hutton, who felt a big gap in the food market for top-quality delivery-only curries. They teamed up with Ron Pereira and the visionary Mr Singh to create the club.

Orders were first fired up in autumn and every week sees a marvellous number of new and returning customers, says Will. There are five chicken dishes (R135 with rice), five lamb dishes (R155 with rice), six vegetarian (R130 with rice) and three seafood mains (R155 to R175). “We purposely chose a short-order menu to allow all dishes to be rockstars,” Will explains.

Don’t live in the city bowl? Hang tight: as soon as the initial Gardens kitchen is completely anchored, The Curry Club will be looking at delivering to various suburbs across the Western Cape. The mobile flight kitchen can also cater for events.

Also look out for The Curry Club’s lunch parties, which incorporate music, art, food and drinks. The first one is happening at The German Club on Sunday 1 July. In the meantime, check them out at www.curryclub.co.za and on Instagram, and place your orders via phone or online from Monday to Saturday, 5pm to 9.30pm.
