Have a hankering for a G&T or anything gin-infused? These five spots won’t let you go thirsty.
Capital Craft is known to be the kuierplek in Pretoria, offering excellent food and a bar list as long your arm. They are known for their insane list of craft beers but their gin selection is not to be ignored. From Wilderer (Fynbos gin) to lemony Malfy gin from Italy, they have something for everyone. The tonic waters on offer are the ever-popular Fitch & Leedes and the Swan craft tonic. They also serve The Duchess non-alcoholic G&Ts. The food menu is almost as extensive as the bar list and you can expect bar food done right. You’ll find burgers, hot dogs, giant sandwiches, sticky ribs and more.
Carbon Bistro is by far the best place to go if you are obsessed with gin, as they carry over 100 different types of craft gin from 26 countries, along with seven types of tonic. Whether you are after Sipsmith Sloe gin from England or one of the very excellent Inverroche gins crafted in Stilbaai, you won’t be disappointed. They have a comprehensive menu with nibbles perfect for ordering alongside your gin, as well as steaks, burgers and desserts.
This very popular Hazelwood eatery has a wide variety of gins (and their selection is ever-growing), with many tonic water options to choose from. Flavours range from apple-and-hibiscus to protea-and-lemon, and their G&Ts come beautifully served in large gin glasses with everything from fresh flowers to beautiful berries. Their food is equally impressive and you can expect a fantastic variety of tapas. Their jalapeño poppers are particularly good.
Old Town Italy offers a delightful range of gin-based cocktails, from the classic negroni and martini to the more exciting Malfy Lemon Squeeze and the Wallflower. The latter is a double shot of Inverroche Amber gin with cucumber and Fabri elderflower, topped up with tonic, while the former sees lemony Malfy gin with grapefruit juice and brown sugar. The food menu is fantastic and you can expect a bevy of Italian delights, from freshly made gnocchi to antipasti platters and light and fluffy bombolini to finish.
The dining choices here are nearly endless. Choose to relax with a cigar in their controlled cigar lounge, dine on the balcony on a long summer’s night or select one of their private dining rooms for a special celebration. Pair one of these experiences with a glass of gin, from which you can pick between Gabriel Boudier saffron-infused gin, Bombay Sapphire, The Botanist, all three types of Inverroche, Gordon’s, Cruxland, Hendrick’s, London No.3 and Tanqueray. Gin cocktails include the usual negroni and martini in addition to their Priva mojito and the Basil Smash. Enjoy with local delights like pap and atchar, chicken strips and a quartet of tacos.
