Top picnic ideas in Durban and surrounds

With the sun staying up a little later these days, it can only mean that picnic season is upon us. Grab a blanket and head to one of these picnic spots around KwaZulu-Natal.

Rain Farm Game & Lodge (Ballito)

A wildlife sanctuary that specialises in luxury getaways, Rain Farm Game Lodge offers three picnic options for day visitors at a rate of R300, R340 or R570 per couple. Couples can also enjoy a game drive with their picnic for a total price of R770. The offering includes treats such as bread and crudites, hummus, chutney grilled aubergines, cocktail sausages with whole grain mustard dip, savoury quiches, mini chocolate brownies and still or sparkling bottled water. Choose to picnic pool or the dam (the latter costs an additional R150).

Highgate Wine Estate (Dargle)

Enjoy a basket of scrumptious goodies at this KZN Midlands wine farm. Pick your picnic spot between the vines, in the forest, or overlooking the damn. Picnics are R350 per person sharing and the estate recommends booking and paying 48 hours in advance. The picnic baskets include a bottle of Highgate Wine Estate wine from their picnic wine selection, a spread of savoury and sweet snacks (including cheese and cold meats, pastries and antipasti), and a picnic blanket to use for the day.

Tala Game Reserve (Camperdown)

Head to this down-to-earth game farm for a unique day out. After a game drive, why not grab a picnic basket to share? Baskets are available daily from 11am to 2pm and costs R350 per basket. This will get you a choice of two salads with options like local bilton and pear or a pasta salad with peppers and ham, plus a choice of two sides including anything from homemade bread and herbed butter to a selection of cheeses and crackers. The baskets also come with two complimentary Appletisers. Picnics must be booked at least 24 hours before collection.

Willow Way Café (Kloof)

This picturesque gem in the leafy Kloof offers guests the opportunity to enjoy their meals as a picnic on their beautifully manicured lawn under the windmill. Any meal on their café menu can be enjoyed picnic-style, baskets included. Enjoy a selection of open sandwiches, harvest boards, toasties and burgers. Heartier options are also on offer like crispy pork belly (available on Saturday and Sundays only). The kiddies are also sorted with their choice of a mini burger, chicken strips, or a full plate of chips.
