5 eateries for inspired brunches around Durban

Brunch might just be the most important meal of the day – especially on a lazy Saturday or Sunday morning, when tables are laden with something eggy, buttery and boozy. These five trendy Durban eateries have their brunch games on-point, with interesting combos like wild-boar prosciutto, chakalaka eggs Benny, and rooibos flapjacks. Here’s where to get your mid-morning fix this weekend.

The Boiler Room (Morningside)

This bright and breezy eatery keeps things exciting with its fun and creative breakfast, brunch and lunch grub. Weekend brunch specials might feature the likes of scrambled egg and spring-onion croissant with wild-boar prosciutto, cheddar cheese and chutney; or braised short-rib sloppy Joe with basil-chilli pesto, chips and coleslaw. If you’re looking at the standard menu, brunchy favourites include braised short-rib on potato hash; spicy beans with smoky pork, sour cream and poached egg; boursin-and-black-pepper omelette with chives; and breakfast buns with egg, basil mayo and grilled mushrooms.

Freedom Café (Greyville)

Brunches here include a Benedict menu with options served with chakalaka or sliced pork sausage.  If you’re looking for French toast, they’ve got you covered with toppings of bacon jam or pear and Nutella. Wash your brunch down with a robot juice or go for the boozy options like the Red Snapper with gin, tomato juice and horseradish.

The Glenwood Bakery (Glenwood)

Locals flock to this suburban gem for lazy mid-morning feasts. While the classic eggs Benedict is wildly popular here, it’s the weekly specials that get us truly excited. Options might include savoury lamb mince with poached eggs on toast; buckwheat blinis with salmon and crème fraîche or raspberries and ice cream; or sourdough toast topped with roasted tomatoes and olive tapenade.

The Joint Jazz Café (OR Tambo Parade)

Enjoy a late start with one of the sunny breakfast options that are served all day. Try the toppling Zulu flapjack stack served with rooibos syrup, whipped cream, banana, bacon, lemon and basil ricotta. There’s even simple Marmite on toast for a taste of nostalgia.

Parc Café (Glenwood)

Enjoy an easy-going sidewalk brunch here. The Not So Benedict is always a win as is the croque monsieur. Be sure to grab a spot early to enjoy the live music on the pavement.
