The World’s 50 Best Restaurants have been revealed at an awards ceremony at the historic Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne, Australia, with Eleven Madison Park in New York securing the number one spot for 2017.
Now in its 15th year, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants welcomes six brand-new entries and three re-entries to the 2017 ranking. Showcasing a broad cross-section of cultures and cuisines, it includes restaurants from 22 countries across five continents. France, Spain and the USA each count six restaurants on the list, and South African restaurants The Test Kitchen and La Colombe made the runners-up list, ranking at number 63 and 73 respectively.
In claiming the top position on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, Eleven Madison Park earns the dual titles of The World’s Best Restaurant and The Best Restaurant in North America after debuting on the list at No.50 in 2010. Last year’s number one, Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy, has moved down to second position, but retains its title as The Best Restaurant in Europe.
Other winners of the night include New York-based pastry entrepreneur Dominique Ansel claiming the 2017 title of The World’s Best Pastry Chef, chef Heston Blumenthal being named the 2017 recipient of the prestigious Diners Club Lifetime Achievement Award, and Ana Roš of Hiša Franko, Slovenia, who was named The World’s Best Female Chef for 2017.
Congratulations to all chefs and restaurants who made the list and to Eleven Madison Park in New York for taking top honours. (Read the review of Eleven Madison Park by our online editor, Katharine Jacobs, who dined there in 2014.)
