From piping-hot roast chicken pot pies to peppery steak encased in a golden, buttery shortcrust, here’s our pick of seven great spots serving glorious pies across the country.
This one-stop bakery shop has been a Durban favourite for decades. The bakery offers a wide variety of pies containing twice as much filling as you’d find elsewhere, which are perfect for eating on the run. Enjoy old favourites like steak and kidney, chicken and mushroom, spinach and cheese, and Durban chicken curry. The golden Cornish pasties and sausage rolls are also popular. If you’re looking for something different, try the puff-pastry parcels filled with cheese and onion, beef and onion, and creamy chicken and roasted veggies. Pro tip: You can also buy frozen and unbaked pies to enjoy at home.
This spot is known as the ‘home of the chicken pie’ for good reason. From the farm shop emerge fresh, hot and home-made pies made with farm-fresh ingredients. They stuff as much filling as possible into the traditional golden crust with fillings like chicken, and steak and kidney, mince, and spinach and feta. Relax in the sun and enjoy it with a choice of tasty accompaniments.

Known as ‘kickass pies’, the filled golden pastry bombs at this hip Bree Street bakery change daily. The miniature pies have fillings like creamy mac ’n cheese (usually available on a Monday), bacon chowder, herby roasted chicken with artichokes and feta, braised beef and shallots, beef lasagne, harissa chicken, and cashew-and-butternut curry. Order your pie with a side salad or grab it to go.
