Arm yourself and prepare for war: zombies are taking Joburg (or Joziburg Lane, at least, for now). Food truck fanatics will know the Zombie Chefs from their mobile kitchen. Now, they’ve opened a bricks-and-mortar restaurant, Zombie Chefs Cafe, at Joziburg Lane.
Edward Clegg – a Culinary Olympian – and Scott Lewis, are the zombies, with the tattoos to prove it. A few years back, while doing a diner stint, the pair looked tiredly at each other in the early hours and both said at once, “I’m a zombie.” Thus they became the Zombie Chefs and quickly developed a reputation for serving unbelievable food from their trailer.
The menu at the new joint focuses on delicious, accessible food. Try the new spring lamb with spring veg-and-farm-feta salad or one of the burger favourites like the Thai chicken burger with homemade pickles and homemade mayo, or the lamb burger with balsamic and mint sauce. The dessert bakes are damn good – try the latticed malva – or their take on the Chelsea bun, baked with apple and bacon inside. Also don’t miss the coffee pretzels that accompany your caffeine: they’re dark knots of coffee, cinnamon and chocolate.
The mobile kitchen will continue running – but now you can also visit Zombie Chefs Café Monday to Friday – and soon every day – from 8am to 3pm.
