The coolest events in Joburg are the ones happening in the inner city – and Eloff Street could not be more central. Down at the bottom of One Eloff, a new urban residential development, is Joziburg Lane, which will host its first pop-up food festival from Friday 27 May to Sunday 29 May 2016.
The man behind the project is Gerald Garner, who turned The Sheds@1Fox in Newtown into a food and entertainment haven. This time he’s at it again, introducing us to another astonishing Joburg food, retail and events space. If you’re tired of the usual market fare, the Joziburg Lane Festival is sure to wake up your jaded palate.
The Tasting Bar is going to be a key feature, where guests can sip the latest urban craft beers and spirits, boutique wines and coffee – and wash down foods that take their fancy from the adjoining foodhall.
You can expect to fill your plate with crab cakes, paninis, butter chicken, bunny chow, prawns, brinjal or cauliflower hummus, chef Edward Clegg’s venison rolls and chilli fries, new cheeses and smoked meats. You’ll also find fresh fruits and veggies, coconut water, Vietnamese iced coffees, biltong and confectionery. Fashion, craft, art and design traders, plus activations, vintage cars and entertainment will appear throughout the lane to create a fantastic street festival.
Entrance to the Joziburg Lane Festival is free except for the grand launch event on Sunday evening from 5pm, for which tickets will be on sale. It all kicks off on Friday 27 May from 6pm with a night of lights, featuring street food and artisanal drinks, fire acts, a saxophone performance and vinyl DJing. Saturday 28 May is Tastes of Africa day, with African-inspired drinks and foods, music and more entertainment. Sunday is geared for casual eating and music, but come evening, the tickets-only event will feature sundowners, gin cocktails, fantastic food and wine pairings, and some entertainment surprises.
