Bree Street’s hip new whiskey bar, Hank’s Olde Irish

In case you were wondering if Bree Street has any more room for quirky speciality restaurants or bars, the answer is yes, they most certainly do. Joining the likes of Bacon on Bree, Culture Club Cheese and Mother’s Ruin Gin Bar is the latest hipster watering hole and whiskey haven, Hank’s Olde Irish.

Reminiscent of an old English pub and inspired by stories by Tom Waits, the new bar within the walls of the popular haunt Weinhaus + Biergarten (formerly known as @Union) will offer Mother City drinks enthusiasts a whiskey, malt and bourbon driven menu. Hank’s owner, Rob Southworth, explains, “Whiskey is our alcohol category of focus, but we do offer a lot more spirits, wines and beers. I used to live in Mexico, so you will also see a small focus towards tequila and mezcal.”

Spirit lovers can look forward to drams of unusual Scotch whiskies, Irish and Japanese whiskeys, bourbons, and brands such as Midleton Barry Crockett, Jameson Rarest Vintage Reserve, Green Spot and Yellow Spot single potstill Irish whiskey, and the Nikka range from Japan. The bar will also slowly start introducing whiskey-based cocktails later this month.

Fans of other kinds of alcohol can still enjoy beers on tap and a growing selection of good local wines such as Leeuwenkuil Cinsault, Bouchard Finlayson Hannibal, and Shannon Sanctuary Peak Sauvignon Blanc.

As for the food, a tapas-style menu will soon be on offer with snacks such as olives, meats and nuts. For patrons looking for something more substantial while they sip, the Hank’s team encourages all guests to take advantage of the menu next door at Weinhaus + Biergarten, as the staff will happily bring it through to the bar. Hank’s is open Wednesdays to Saturdays from 5pm until late.
