It’s no surprise that Bree Street has become one of Cape Town’s favourite foodie (read: hipster) zones at a blistering pace, home as it is to the likes of IYO Burgers, winner of the burger category at the 2015 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Best Everyday Eateries, longstanding favourite Jason Bakery, and all manner of new concepts and brands. So, when there are whisperings of a new addition to the foodie fraternity, our insatiable curiosity gets the better of us and we move along at a good clip to be first in line.
Run by a wife and husband duo, health-and-fitness whiz Dominique Beaumont Louzan and Santiago Louzan Fidalgo, who has over 17 years experience in Michelin-star standard catering in the UK under his belt, Little Saint is a quaint new eatery on upper Bree Street that prides itself on sourcing local, fresh and sustainable produce.
Having only opened its doors recently (Tuesday, 1 December), Little Saint has a menu that’s small but easy-on-the-pocket, offering a bit of this and a bit of that. You will relish the beaut that is their sweet potato tortilla (R55). Based on a popular Spanish dish traditionally made with potatoes, this version proves itself worthy and quite literally makes me go ‘mmm’ with every mouthful. The sweet and savoury flavours of sweet potato and egg dance on the palate, with just a tinge of tartness from the tomato and spring onion vinegar dressing. The portion is quite substantial and is served with a simple side salad, too. The menu stars everything from eggs and mushrooms to honey from which you can make your own light meal. As clichéd as the egg, bacon and avo combo on toast sounds, the secret lies in the preparation and presentation. The bacon is crispy, the avo soft and creamy, and the eggs fried to perfection – all coming together beautifully on generously buttered toast. This is a good option for both brekkie and lunch. The Louzans also swear by their triple-cooked pork belly (R80) and they’ve just added desserts to their menu. Think poached pear and jalapeño-infused pudding with cream.
For something thirst-quenching, go for the kombucha or JuiceBox (R22 and R20 respectively). But if you’re in need of a caffeine fix, here you’ll find a special Little Saint blend (Guatemalan and Rwandan) by Kamili priced between R20 and R22. New flavours of smoothies will also be added as the weeks go by (currently you can try a strawberry-and-banana version) and there’s an exclusive wine list, some craft beer options and classic cocktails.
The outside area, seating about 30 patrons, is perfect for soaking up some sun now that summer’s in full swing. Inside you’ll find simple wooden interior featuring a stone wall, a fully edible vertical garden, and a stunning high ceiling that makes the space light and airy. There’s also a smaller, more intimate room downstairs where you’ll find beautiful artwork, and there’s a Moroccan courtyard at the back.
Friendly, attentive and efficient.
