Soothe your soul with this video of how to ice a cake

Here at Eat Out, we’re always looking to grow, and this video in which Baked cake decorator Veronika Matunin teaches us how to ice a cake struck us as particularly instructive.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Invest in a cake spinner, a metal spatula and a cake comb.
  • Use an unholy amount of buttercream icing (“frosting” in American English).
  • Trim the top off the cake so it’s perfectly flat. You can use this part for trifle, cake pops, placating cake-mad kids – or yourself.
  • Use simple syrup to moisten the cake, before icing it.
  • First cover the cake in something called a crumb coat. (Sounds like our kind of garment!)
  • Then add even more icing.
  • Pretend that your spatula is landing like an aeroplane on the icing. (It’s not clear which part of landing you should replicate, although we don’t think the noises are necessary.)
  • You can also cover the entire thing in hundreds and thousands (“sprinkles” in American English), or in artful smears by heating up your spatula with a blowtorch.

Alternatively, just watch the video on repeat until you hear distant birdsong and feel your worries evaporating and your mind clearing.
