Graeme Smith’s favourite restaurants

Graeme Smith might be best known as South Africa’s former cricket captain, but he’s is also one of three players behind the Momentum Cricket Sixes series, a charitable event that raises funds for a bursary programme and Mark Boucher’s Rhino in Safe Hands campaign. This year the series is taking place at Wanderers on 5 September, and will also host a joint performance by Prime Circle, Watershed, Jesse Clegg, Ard Matthews and Gangs of Ballet.

He’s also been known to hang out with MasterChef SA’s Pete Goffe-Wood, take part in chilli-eating contests and bake cupcakes.

We asked the cricket player to share his restaurant recommendations in every category. (And yes, one particular Portuguese pub in Green Point features heavily…)

The best restaurant you’ve tried when on tour anywhere in the world?

Big Easy in Chelsea, London.

Favourite dish?

I love peri-peri chicken and Thai food.

Favourite South African food?

Obviously braai!

What’s on your braai?

Chops, chicken and pork ribs.

What’s your go-to pre-match meal?

No red meat and light food that’s not too rich.

And post-match?

I’m usually starving. It’s the one night where I don’t need to worry about my health and I have a pizza or burger.

Best place for a pizza? And what toppings would be on ‘The Graeme Smith’, if it were a pizza?

Borruso’s in Claremont. The Graeme Smith would be anything with mushrooms on it.

Your favourite spot for a celebratory dinner?

Vasco in Greenpoint.

Catch Graeme in action at the Momentum Cricket Sixes at Wanderers Sports Club in Joburg on the 5 September. Tickets are available through Webtickets.
