5 great hot chocolates in Joburg

This winter we’re sending out a call to ditch the powder and say no to weak and insipid hot chocolate. Life’s too short not to slurp on silky melted chocolate in frothy milk – with toasted marshmallows on top, thank you very much. Here are five great examples in Johannesburg, from red espresso white hot chocolate to Lindt balls melted at the bottom of a cup of textured milk. Life is good.

Craft (Parkhurst)

A great buzzing craft beer hotspot, Craft is also known for its innovative milkshakes in flavours like Ferroro Rocher and delicious baked goods like flourless chocolate truffle cake. For chocolate in hot liquid form, order their infusion of crushed hazelnut and melted blocks of real chocolate, blended to a smooth finish with frothed milk, poured into a glass glazed with melted chocolate, and topped with toasted marshmallows (R48).

Father Coffee (Braamfontein)

Dedication to good beans and brews hasn’t stopped Father Coffee from bringing out the big guns with their Lindt hot chocolate (R27). Two Lindt Lindor balls (one dark and one milk chocolate) are popped in a glass, covered with textured milk, and stirred up to melty perfection. They also do a chilli version for an extra kick. (If you’re a keen coffee bean, you should try their new single-origin Kenyan coffee from Karatina in the Nyeri region. Owner Barry says it’s rich and intense up front, with a creamy, buttery mouthfeel and a finish of blackcurrant.)

Indulgence Café (Northcliff)

This luxury hot chocolate (R28) lives up to its name: a mixture of dark and milk chocolate is stirred into hot milk and topped off with marshmallows. While it’s incredibly rich, it’s not overly sweet (apart from the marshmallows). Alternatively, go for a white version (R28) made with melted white chocolate stirred into hot milk. They also offer a chilli hot chocolate (R23) with a hint of extra heat to ward off the cold.

Life Grand Café (Hyde Park)

Find decadent hot drinks galore at the Hyde Park branch of this café. The Lollipop Chocolat (milk) and Lollipop Blanc (white) are slowly melted by stirring into hot milk (both R24). The Red Hot White Chocolate (R26) features rooibos espresso, hot milk and a white chocolate lollipop. If you really want to push the boat out, order either the Dulce de Leche (R30), a tall glass of hot milk with dulce de leche (milky caramel) stirred in, and a flake for good measure, or the Sucre Latte (R20) of hot frothed milk flavoured with vanilla, hazelnut, cinnamon, crème brûlée or amaretto. (Though these last two don’t contain any chocolate.)

Vovo Telo (Parkhurst)

This artisanal bakery and café is an offshoot of the original Vovo Telo that started in Port Elizabeth and is credited for bringing ‘proper’ bread to South Africa. Vovo Telo serves hot chocolate in the form of a lollipop of solid dark Belgian chocolate melted into frothed hot milk (R28). Also try the silky white hot chocolate (R24), white chocolate mocha with a hint of coffee (R26), or, for nut nuts, the macadamia chocolate mocha (R26).
