Cape Town is mourning restaurateur Arnold Bettendorf, who died in a road accident on 19 November on the N1. Bettendorf was the owner of the eponymous Arnold’s restaurant on Kloof Street, a favourite foodie destination amongst city locals, popular for its wonderful breakfast bargains and date night dinner specials. Prior to opening Arnold’s a good 18 years ago, Bettendorf spent time honing his hospitality management skills overseas, serving as an apprentice in Trier, Germany, in 1972 before splitting his time between work and travel in Berlin, London, Johannesburg and finally, Cape Town. IOL reports that Bettendorf’s son, Ben, will take over the running of Arnold’s.

BMC Bicycle Maintenance Company will be hosting a memorial ride for Bettendorf on the morning of 29 November at 7.30am outside Arnold’s restaurant in Kloof Street. Follow @BMC_CapeTown on Twitter for more information about the ride.

The restaurant industry is still reeling after the death of chefs Bruce Robertson and Jacques Fourie, who both passed away earlier this month.
