Two Cape Town restaurants at the V&A Waterfront, the Greek Fisherman Restaurant and the City Grill Steakhouse have won an international Spanish award – the Wild Bull Trophy 2007 – in the International Tourist, Hotel and Catering category.
From a pool of only 103 winners worldwide, this is a major achievement for Cape Town and the restaurant industry in South Africa.
Other SA restaurants in the past which have received the prestigious award are Leeuwenzee Guest House in Sea Point, Jimmys Killer Prawns in Bedfordview and Emilys Restaurant in the Waterfront.
How are they chosen?
Unknown to restaurants, select members of the Spanish-based Trade Leader’s Club (with a whopping 7 000 members in total from 120 countries) visited them and rated them on ‘service, food, décor and overall appeal’.
The Greek Fisherman Restaurant and the City Grill Steakhouse made the grade this year!
These two restaurants have the same owner, Peter Protoulis, who humbly says, ‘We thought theyd made a mistake when we learned that both restaurants had won’.
‘Once you realise the rigorous process that goes into the selection and judging of these awards, you appreciate even more how much of an accolade it is to win one trophy, let alone two. Im a very proud man and Im in very good company with other winners around the world.’
