Origin Coffee Roasting has won 3 out of 4 awards at the first ever South African National Barista Championships.

25 of SA’s top Baristas competed in the competition, which formed part of the recent Cape Gourmet Festival. Officially sanctioned by the world governing WBC – World Barista Championship – Origins took top prize and will now represent South Africa at the World Barista Championships in Tokyo in July 2007.

Each contestant had to whip up 4 Espressos, 4 Cappuccinos and 4 Signature Coffees which were judged by John Saunders (head of the technical standards committee for the WBC), Klaus Thomsen (current reigning World Barista Champion from Denmark), together with top South African chefs, food and wine writers & coffee industry experts.

Willem Pienaar received US$ 350, a return flight to Tokyo and R5 000 spending money.
