Along with the arrival of new Executive Chef, Henry Jonkers, at the well-known Seapoint beachfront hotel, the Winchester Mansions, comes new Malay-inspired fusion cuisine for their restaurant Harveys at the Mansions.
The terrace at the Winchester has always been a great place to sit with your evening drink and watch the day become night, in a beautiful seafront setting. This time, try a hearty Cape dish afterwards.
Chef Henry, who has been in the industry for 25 years, believes that in order to cook a successful meal, it must come from the heart before it turns up on your plate.
With a strong Cape Malay cooking background, the new Malay-focussed menu seems to come naturally for Henry, who in the past has worked and travelled with famous SA chef, Garth Stroebel, promoting Cape Malay style food in Stockholm, Sweden.
Cape Malay cuisine
The menu is now littered with rich and aromatic flavours, traditionally stemming from the Cape.
Menu items include starters such as Coriander infused shrimp bobotie with pineapple chutney and mains include Baked kingklip Malay with glazed sweet potato and butternut – served with tropical fruit salsa and a light coconut curry cream sauce, and of course chicken, ostrich and prawn curries as well as a Lamb and green Bredie.
End with Traditional Cape brandy pudding. Of course.
