Feeding young minds

Poverty, hungry children and top-class chefs… an unlikely combination?

Not in the Western Cape, where Eat Out award-winning chefs Reuben Riffel (Reubens), Margot Janse (The Tasting Room at Le Quartier Francais) and Bertus Basson (Overture) will be visiting five schools during the month of October in an effort to provide nutritious, low-cost meals that are imaginative and tasty.

Partnering with the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) who feeds 228,200 children in 638 schools daily, the chefs will aim to enhance the staple diet of soya, bread and rice into meals that are high in nutritional value and taste.

According to research carried out by the University of Cape Town’s Children’s Institute, three out of every four children in the Western Cape are living in poverty, with approximately 30% of the population experiencing food insecurity.

How can you help?

The current meals are designed to meet one third of a child’s recommended daily allowance (RDA), and cost R1,20 to provide. Through the PSFA’s Adopt-a-Child scheme, you can support a child for one year, at a cost of R235.

Companys can “adopt-a-school” for a year at R1.20 per child per day. Monthly, quarterly or annual donations are also welcome. For more information log onto www.psfa.org.za
