Elegance at Burnside’s

Burnside’s, which recently opened in a revamped house in the upmarket suburb of Craighall in Johannesburg, caters for the breakfast and lunch crowds.

Part-owner Jessica du Plessis (her brother Dylan is the other half) is a chef-cum-food stylist, which means that you can expect excellent cuisine, styled to perfection. In fact, the food is so good that the spot has already acquired an impressive regular trade.

The menu is simple, going for the “less is more” approach. Think croissants with mascarpone, figs and pecan nuts for breakfast, and light lunches done gourmet-style. The salads, such as the gorgonzola, seasonal fruit and candied pecan salad, and the menu-topping trout crème fraîche salad, are particularly good.

Get stuck into spectacular sarmies, including the likes of roast organic gammon and sweet mustard sauce, or one of the best roast chicken, mushroom and herb pies in Jozi.

By the time you get to the desserts, you’re left wondering whether it can get any better. The answer is yes, especially if you have a sweet tooth – the choc brownies and ice cream and lemon cheesecake are heaven on a plate.

Don’t go there if you’re in a rush; Burnside’s is one of those luxurious spots where you should take your time eating gorgeous food, while sipping on a glass of wine (the list is small but impressive) and enjoying the lovely surroundings. Sit out on the wide verandah in comfortable chairs and while away the day.
