My week of local is lekker

I am often asked where people can eat real South African food. It’s a tough question to answer because it’s difficult to pinpoint just one cuisine that celebrates the essence of South Africa. So many different cultures are showcased in different regions around the country.

But this week I found something really special. I was completely mesmerised while having lunch at Pierneef à la Motte on the La Motte wine estate in Franschhoek. The restaurant celebrates old Cape food and cooking methods, and chef Chris Erasmus has designed a menu that showcases Cape winelands cuisine. I listened to stories about the rich pickings of the land and sea in the early days of the Cape colony, and how dishes were prepared back then. Even the simple apple tart we had for dessert had a history. Chris told me how whole apples were poached in a skillet, topped with pastry, and then piled with hot coals. I could have stayed there all day lapping up every word of his inspiring stories.

Chris picked baby carrots and boerbone from the veggie garden for me to taste as he shared his ideal of using seasonal, organic and local produce. One of the dishes on the menu is a gorgeous salad – a twist on the Caesar, but using bokkoms instead of anchovies. And I am still dreaming about the atchar ice cream accompanied by a slice of pumpkin tart, and the koningsbrood soup with a small ball of breaded veal nestled on a marrow bone, served with a little pot bread traditionally made with lamb fat.

As a fitting end to a wonderful day, I went home with a real treat – a loaf of shiraz bread.

Happy local eating!
