My week of Greek salads

The simplest dish is not always easy to find. I discovered this while trying to find a decent Greek salad recently. Why do I keep being served tasteless wedges of greenish tomatoes, watery olives and horrid, soapy feta cheese? Maybe it’s because we don’t have that many Greek restaurants in Cape Town. It can’t be that difficult: all you need is tasty, red tomatoes, a crisp cucumber, thinly sliced red onions, plump olives, creamy or crumbly feta, all tossed with fruity olive oil, red-wine vinegar and dried origanum. If you can get hold of the authentic herb, which grows on the mountains in Greece, that’s even better. The Greek Sizzler in Randburg knows what they’re doing and plates up the real thing. Back home in Cape Town, Ocean Basket does a pretty good version with a slab of feta on the top, as does Ari’s Souvlaki and Sloppy Sam’s. If you know of a restaurant that gets it right, please let me know!

Happy eating!
Abigail
