Tucked away in the cosy shopping mall of Stellenbosch Square, Streets Café is a local eatery offering international experiences. The walls are covered with beautiful floor-to-ceiling murals of street scenes from France, Argentina, Turkey, Italy and Morocco, giving customers the experience of sitting in a side street café, somewhere in the world, as opposed to being in a mall.
The café was inspired by a love of food and travel, with the concept of typical street food from around the world served with a local twist. Head chef Precious Dlamini and her team serve up a vast array of enticing global dishes, such as Portuguese chicken livers, Mexican wraps, Greek schwarmas, Italian frittata, Australian jaffles, Chinese spring rolls, German bockwurst, French pan bagnat, Indian curries, Italian pasta and Canadian flapjacks. For the customer with a local appetite, Streets Café also offers traditional South African dishes, such as bobotie. In addition to the a la carte menu, there is also a range of daily specials to choose from, such as the Roast of the Day, Cajun chicken salad with paw-paw salsa and mild butter chicken curry.
Streets Café focuses on providing a variety of dishes made from locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. You can taste the difference. They use a local fruit and vegetable supplier from Stellenbosch, who keeps them well-stocked with fresh produce. The paw-paw salsa, for example, is made daily with paw-paws delivered each morning by the supplier. Fresh herbs obtained from Allee Bleu in Franschhoek are used in abundance: mint for the tzatziki for the schwarmas, coriander for the salsas and basil for the pastas and garnishes.
For a culinary journey around the world, without the need for a passport or the hassle of packing a suitcase, Streets Café is worth a visit.
