A breath of fresh air

Last week I left the city and became quite a country bumpkin for a change. I was visiting the Natal Midlands for our sister magazine, Eat In, scouting out some best-kept secrets along the Midlands Meander.

Over three days (which were gloriously mild) we packed in cheese tastings, pickles and pastes in every guise, artisanal ales, courgette flower tempura, grass-fed beef dried wors and ice-cold Frankies – a range of old-fashioned soda pops made in the area.

I still had my Eat Out hat on and managed to sneak in a few restaurants, of course. Signs promising blueberries lured me into Blueberry Hill, a modern architectural building boasting a magnificent view, excellent Welsh rarebit and blueberry cheesecake.

I then spent some time sampling some delicious sausages with Jarrod from Hatting's sausages in Hilton. He suggested I have lunch at La Popote, which was just up the dirt road. It’s a lovely spot with tables outside overlooking sweeping vistas and serves homemade roasted Provençal tart, curried apple soup and the fluffiest crumpets. I just couldn’t resist – it must have been all that fresh air.

Happy eating!
Abigail
