Studded with sidewalk cafés, boutique stores and galleries, and serenaded by banjo-playing buskers, Stellenbosch’s Church Street seems to be where all the action is these days. One of the newest additions to this buzzing strip is the diminutive wine boutique, Brampton Wine Studio.

As one would expect from an establishment marketing itself as a studio, the interior is pared down and minimalistic, with main focal points including a slick bamboo and marble counter illuminated by a row of dangling orbs, a feature wall slash blackboard scribbled with the wine list, and a choice scattering of colourful tiles.

Serving as a shop front for Brampton wines, which formerly belonged to the Rustenberg stable, but was recently bought over by DGB Corporate, it is essentially a cellar-door tasting room, but does also offer light lunches like salads, wraps and quesadillas until 4.30pm, should all the tippling leave you feeling peckish.

Wines up for the sampling include a sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, rosé, merlot, shiraz, viognier, as well as a red blend called OVR, which is comprised of 7 different varietals and was awarded 4 stars by John Platter. Should you opt for the wine and snack pairing, the sauv blanc is partnered up with green olives, the unoaked chardonnay with camembert and pistachio nuts, the OVR blend with biltong and the shiraz with dark raspberry chocolate.

One last incentive to put a visit to Brampton Studio on your to-do list, is that they’re an environmentally aware bunch. The day’s wine and food specials are written on a blackboard instead of printed menus, bottled water makes way for filtered tap water, the lights use energy efficient bulbs and the order forms are printed on recycled paper.
