Going gourmet in Strand

In a sense it’s quite a brave move, opening a restaurant in Strand. While Stellenbosch and Somerset West have always had a healthy foodie culture, Strand is better known for cheap and cheerful fish ‘n chip shops than gourmet food. But Cucina Carolina, which opened at the beginning of this month, seeks to change that by offering Strand residents something a little different.

Stocking Richard Bosman charcuterie and bread that’s freshly baked each day and brought in from Cassis, this is a slightly different beachside lunch spot. There’s also fresh sushi, expertly prepared by sushi chef William, and handmade pizza on offer, kneaded and baked in front of you by joint-owner, Lee. “Some of our Italian friends will only eat Lee’s pizza. It is really the best,” Carolina, who hails from Holland, declares.

Owners Carolina and Lee are not new to the restaurant trade. They previously owned an Italian restaurant and a wine farm in Wellington before heading off to live in Italy for a few years. However, Lee, a Durbanite, missed home too much, and the couple returned to South Africa in May of this year. “It has all happened very fast,” Carolina acknowledges.

On opening night, there’s driving rain and gale-force winds – not ideal weather to experience a beachside restaurant. But the owners are a lovely, warm couple, and the pizza – thin, tasty and covered in light bubbles – is fantastic. The presence of a pianola, which Carolina plays with great verve, makes it easy to imagine this restaurant becoming a popular neighbourhood haunt, and a great addition to the Strand restaurant scene.
