This little whitewashed town might look like a Greek fishing village from afar, but Paternoster is developing its own cuisine thanks to a handful of inspired chefs and restaurateurs. From fine dining and holiday pub fare with sea views to homemade sausages and bokkoms, here’s our pick of the restaurants in Paternoster.

Gaaitjie
A cosy little restaurant with great sea views from the balcony. Choose between fantastic seafood options like mussel masala soup and crispy spring rolls of tuna and basil, and meatier choices like crispy orange and clove pork belly.

The Noisy Oyster
Enjoy a romantic dinner or lunch in the courtyard, with its flickering fairy lights. The oysters are outstanding, and the fresh, locally caught fish is delicious.

Oep ve Koep
Kobus van der Merwe explores the terroir of the West Coast with an inspired array of dishes, making use of local produce like bokkoms, dune spinach, and home-made springbok sausage. Not to be missed.
Average main course: R50.

Paternoster Lodge
Make sure you sit on the balcony of this restaurant for a fabulous view of the bay. Expect holiday bistro fare. They also do a mean breakfast.
Average main course: R85.

Saffron
If you’re after a special evening out, Saffron is the place to go. Darren Stewart turns out a fabulous fine dining menu in a quirky, lavish space. You can also book for a spectacular breakfast spread or a high tea with scones, cakes and all the trimmings.
Average main course: R105 or R265 for six-course tasting menu.

Voorstrandt
Book for one of the seafront tables and enjoy up-market pub grub. There’s a good selection of Swartland wines and Darling Brew beers on tap.
