Iconic local dishes on MasterChef SA

Iconic South African food was the name of the game in last night’s episode of MasterChef SA. With only eleven contestants left by the end of the show, the heat is definitely on in the kitchen. Episode 8 had contestants face a taste test before going through a cooking challenge. The latter was completed by the bottom eight contestants, divided into teams of two.

Each team had to visit a restaurant, taste a traditional local dish, and then chase back to the MasterChef kitchen to recreate it. Want to visit these special restaurants yourself? Read on.

Eziko
The Langa restaurant specialises in traditional African food and cooks it with gusto. Their speciality is tripe and pap, and it fell to Ilse and Manisha to remake it. The judges were wowed and the two girls made it safely to the next round.

Goedemoed Country Inn
Situated on a working wine farm in Paarl, this guesthouse serves meals to residents only. So if you want to taste their delicious waterblommetjie bredie – which Sue-Ann and Jade almost failed to recreate – make sure to book a night or two’s stay.

Biesmiellah
This typically Cape Malay restaurant is situated in the Bo-Kaap and dishes out anything from traditional bobotie with fruity yellow rice to bayleaf-rich crayfish curry. Last night, Thys and Deena made denningvleis – and impressed the judges enough to make it to the next round.

De Volkskombuis
The Stellenbosch restaurant is known for boerekos with a twist. The most popular dish on the menu? Meraai’s chicken pie. Unfortunately, Brandon and Babalwa couldn’t quite reconstruct it, and had to go home.

Feeling adventurous? Make your own chicken pie and home-made short-crust pastry.
