Stellenbosch’s picturesque Postcard Café

Drive a few kilometres out of Stellenbosch on the beautiful Jonkershoek Road and you’ll find a spot so picturesque it looks like something out of a fairytale.

Food
In comparison to the view, food is a little pedestrian: expect toasted sarmies, pasta dishes and light breakfasts such as muesli and yogurt with apricot sauce, scones with jam and cheese and omelettes with bacon, cheddar and rocket. The dish of crispy fried prawns on greens with creamy lemon dressing comes with four tasty, crunchy prawns. For dessert, the pear and berry crumble is gooily good with the nutty goodness of brown sugar. Bread-based dishes are a good bet, as award-winning Oude Bank Bakkerij supplies the bread.

Mood
This is what draws the crowds to Postcard Café, and what makes it necessary to book your table for a light lunch or simple breakfast some days in advance. Situated on the Stark Conde wine estate, this is certainly a gorgeous setting. Ask to sit outside beneath the leafy trees or on the patio and look out over the perfect reflecting lake with its lily pads, and up the lawns towards the jagged mountains on either side. This is relaxed, outdoor dining that soothes the soul.

Drinks
The restaurant serves Stark-Conde wines at cellar door prices as well as Villiera bubbly. The homemade apricot soda is deliciously different and a red-berry ginger ale is sweet and unusual.

Service Relaxed but adequate. Latecomers beware: your table will be given up to someone else, so make sure to get there on time for your reservation.

And…
This is a great place to have a light meal and refuel during a busy day of wine tasting. Pop into the wine estate’s tasting room that’s situated in a fairytale wooden hut (with the mod-con bonus of air-conditioning) on the lake.
