After a tough day at the office, it’s quite a battle fighting the urge to dive face-first into whatever’s available in your kitchen. It’s a whole other ballgame trying to resist just going out for a burger. This quintessential Friday night meal is available, just there, waiting for you, every day of the week… Usually we hold out until the end so we can savour every bite – washed down by some craft beer, of course – when the weekend finally comes.
Why do we associate the idea of a perfectly grilled burger with the end of a working week? Is it because eating a burger is such a guilty pleasure that it may rip you from your schedule, causing you to spiral down into the junk-food pit, never to return to salads again? It would be worth it, we say. You really don’t want to miss out on the gourmet burgers on our list, with toppings ranging from halloumi to bone marrow, mature cheddar and onion jam. This is a delicious way to fall from grace.

You forgot the Ostrich Burger at The Wolfpack in Parkhurst!
Thank you for featuring the Corner Post Deluxe burger – a true favourite!
Dukes – REALLY?
Are you joking? Have you actually EATEN there recently and, if so, WHEN?
Or, does Eatout simply recycle the same old “best of” articles every so often without bothering to visit the restaurants under discussion.
Hi Dr. Zeek. Our ‘best’ lists are compiled from recommendations by fans on social media, panellists (reviewers) and Eat Out staff, backed up by the most current menus and prior experience. We’re sorry that you don’t agree on all the restaurants included in this burger guide, but our aim is to offer as comprehensive and representative a list as possible. Thanks for your feedback!
Thank you for introducing me to Plant. Life changing!!!!!
You really need to add Waxy O’Connors to this list. They won the ‘Best Burger in Durban’ in 2013!
How did you guys miss Burger Bistro in Pretoria?
You’re right, Peter! They were in the Eat Out 500 too. Have added them in now. Thanks for spotting that.
You forgot that the best burgers in Cape Town are served at Rick’s café Americain. Ostrich or natural beef!
Thanks for the recommendation, Per. Those burgers are worthy indeed. We’ve added them now. All the best
My colleague and I were in Cape Town last week for a client meeting and we stopped at Hudsons Burger Joint for dinner. I am a huge fan of their burgers but my colleague has never eaten there before. He is a die-hard burger fan in general and was very excited. I ordered the Bacon Jam burger and he had The Player. I was in foodie heaven with every bite – he was thoroughly disappointment. It then turned into rather a debate between him and I about the humble burger.
He claims if you are going to pay that much for a gourmet burger it really needs to be “blow your socks off” delicious – not taste home made. He said he could make better burgers at home. I counter-argued the fact that the homemade taste is the whole point of a gourmet burger because it is made with care and love and has the signature of the establishment that made it – not a processed defrosted patty other establishments serve. Even though you could make it better at home, the whole point is to enjoy their idea of what a yummy burger is.
He still disagrees. When I saw this list published, I sent it to him – pointing out Hudsons and that the burger he ordered was a signature burger there, he then responded that for him: “a solid patty is the foundation of a good burger .”
This debate will continue as it is now leading into taste vs texture territory.
Can you point me to an ultimate burger guide. I have no interest in gourmet burgers. I am a classic burger enthusiast and scour the country looking for the ultimate classic burger.

In your own opinion or, are you the boss of burgers and what goes on them? Remember, there are so many people who live for a great burger, that means, restaurants have to/want to cater to their needs.
Best advice for you, don’t venture out of your front door. Rather do everyone a favour and stay home and cook your own 🙂
You guys should try The NOB in Woodstock!
Thanks Tammy – we do love The Nob – they’re included in the Cape Town section above. (All hail The Porker!)
The burgers at the Hard Rock café on Nelson Mandela square are also really good! Nothing out of the ordinary, but truly amazing traditional burgers! Delicious, juicy patties are always cooked to perfection and the buns are also very fresh!
Hi Melinda-Michelle, Thanks for the comment. Sometimes simplicity is the best – fresh buns and juicy patties are the most important things of all.
Pretty disappointed that the Whippet’s (linden, johannesburg) burger didn’t make the list. It really should
Hi Andrew, thanks very much for the input. We’ll have to investigate! (It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it!)
I think your articles need more inspiration and direction, trying to ‘choose’ the best 300 / 600 burgers in South Africa is tired and generally going to get a list of people moaning about not being in them. Who decides? what makes them good? Are they really that good?

enough said.
Thanks for this. I would like to say few things. Why dont you ever feature places in the deep south. Two places that you have to try for their burgers and food in general is Empire Cafe in Muisenberg and Light House Cafe in Simons Town. SERIOUSLY, do a feature on “us”. Get some of those hipsters out of town and down into the peninsula. xxx
Hi Lara, Thanks for the suggestions. We certainly do venture down to the deep south on occasion, but you’re quite right that it’s time for a dedicated feature about Muizenberg and beyond.
