My mom and I usually go to Minato's for lunch, it's our usual meeting point when we're working in the city. It's a quick escape to quint little restaurant for the tastiest Tuna sashimi and miso soup you have ever tasted...literally. The freshest ingredients to hit your taste buds. The lady that runs the place is always super friendly and helpful, her passion for her restaurant clearly shines through. We love it and will keep coming back.. Thank you!
Minato is now under (terrible) new ownership. While it was always a bit of an experience, the sushi was decent even if the owner more eccentric than you necessarily wanted to deal with. I was in the area recently and needed a quick lunch--seeing that Minato had moved to 210 on Long, I ran in and quickly ordered a rainbow roll without looking at the menu, then did an errand and came back. Eight gigantic sushi rolls arrived, which no human could possibly fit in their mouth at one time. The fish was not fresh, there was nothing tasty or aesthetically pleasing about this dish. I managed to force down four pieces before giving up as there was nothing to enjoy in this dish. I was then shocked to hear that this terrible dish cost R120, including a 10% service charge that is added to all orders. I might expect to pay that at Nobu or Kyoto Garden, where a delicious dish would be served in return. The point of this review is simply to caution you not to make the same mistake and ever dine at Minato again.
It's almost like I was at entirely different restaurant to the average customer giving rave reviews. Not sure where the standards are derived but this was frankly one of the worst sushi experiences for me on numerous levels. Grossly overpriced in every way. Sushi is bulky and untidy and the tempura or deep friend versions oily and unpleasant. Sushi represents some form of snobbery and the attention to detail was almost non existent. It sadly shows how this restaurant cares more for profits than for the art and experience of exceptionally presented sushi. A bill of over R240 per person when we each had approx 2.5 orders is ludicrous and the ambience is simply bland and sad. I will not be returning for any reason. I suggest the owners make a trip to Sushi Box in Claremont to have a look how it's done and although not cheap, their presentation has you forgive this element.

I am a Willoughbys snob. Addicted to the sushi there and have been on a mission and hunt to find another sushi place with sushi as addictive. I've tried Takumi, Saigon, Kyoto Garden Sushi and the rest. But this is by far the best sushi fix. It may not be as gourmet and fancy as Willoughby's but the fish is fresh, the rice is delicious and there are some very different and innovative rolls on the menu ,) The service is great and friendly, but when busy the food will come out slow... (worth the wait though). I'm delighted to find a fix other than Willoughbys ,) Really am ,)

It took me a long time to find this little gem of a sushi spot. There are dishes on the menu that cannot be found at any other 'wanna-be' sushi restaurant and I can't help but keep going back at least once a month.

If you like sushi try this place. You will not be disappointed.
