South Africa’s first Baskin-Robbins store to open this month

Baskin-Robbins, the largest global chain of ice-cream speciality stores, has landed in South Africa and will open its first store in Canal Walk on 9 December at 11am.

Known for having 31 flavours – one for every day of the month – Baskin-Robbins has followed its sister companies, Burger King and Dunkin’ Donuts, to the Mother City. Says Grand Parade Investment’s Marketing and Communications Executive, Rozanna Kader: “We love Cape Town; it’s our home ground.”

Baskin-Robbins is setting its own course when it comes to branch locations, though. Whereas Dunkin’ Donuts opened at N1 City first and Burger King in the City Bowl, the Baskin-Robbins flagship branch will be in Canal Walk (joining the second Capetonian branch of Dunkin’ Donuts). The store will be one of the largest in Cape Town, as Baskin-Robbins tries various formats in an effort to find the best fit for South Africa.

The brand intends to bring its lighthearted and innovative approach to our shores by tailoring flavours for South African tastes. The popular Pralines ‘n Cream, Very Berry Strawberry and Chocolate Overload (with no added sugar) will be available, as well as Green Tea, Earl Grey and Cookies, Mango Tango, Citrus Twist (a non-dairy option), Jamoca Almond Fudge and Love Potion #31. The ice creams will be swapped out regularly at all stores to make way for new flavours. They will also do milkshakes and ice cream cakes for all occasions.

Two more stores are set to open before the end of the year, and a total of six in the Western Cape by the middle of 2017. Baskin-Robbins will then move on to begin opening stores in Gauteng.
