Wolfgat, which placed number 4 at the Eat Out Restaurant Awards in 2019, has been named the 50th Best Restaurant in the World and the Best in Africa. Chef Kobus van der Merwe and his team continuously impress diners and critics alike with their innovative approach to local cuisine, so this award is well earned.

Wolfgat’s dining concept centres on the fresh ingredients found on the West Coast – the restaurant is situated in the small seaside town of Paternoster. Delicacies such as limpet, dune celery and waterblommetjies are reimagined as fine dining creations that not only look striking on the plate but taste exceptional too. The restaurant’s wine and cocktail selections are unique, highlighting the impressive ingredients and vineyards right on our doorstep.
In an Instagram post, Kobus expressed his gratitude for Wolfgat being rated amongst the world’s best, especially after such a challenging period in history, saying: “All our heroes – local and international chefs and restaurants that we admire and have been looking up to – are featured here, so it seems quite surreal and undeserved that we should be ranked amongst them. But we are honoured to be selected, and proud to represent South Africa, and Paternoster in particular, on the global stage. Given the extremely challenging past year-and-a-half we’ve faced globally, especially in the hospitality industry, recognition of this kind comes as a welcome moral boost.”
