Is there anything better than freshly baked bread and butter? The sea salt and rosemary bread is served with farm-fresh butter and forms the showpiece of the harvest table. ‘Harvest table’ is loosely used nowadays to describe a selection of salads, but at Fynboshoek everything is freshly picked within walking distance of the yellow farmhouse. There’s no menu to order from – instead it feels as though you’re joining friends for lunch lovingly prepared on their farm, with a focus on wholesome fresh ingredients.

The award-winning fior di latte has a soft cloud-like texture, served with a tomato medley, fresh herbs and olive oil. Sheep’s milk feta is served atop a bed of garden lettuce and flowers with grilled pear slices and toasted sunflower seeds.
Five farm cheeses are served on a wooden board with a slice of tree tomato and pear: creamy cottage cheese, even creamier ricotta with the farm’s own honey, two-year matured cheddar, smoked provolone and a young romano. Romano cheese has a similar taste to parmesan, but this one is younger with a subtler flavour. Seeing the bright-red tree tomatoes (and lemons) growing in the garden from where you sit only adds to the feeling of abundance and country bliss.

Say yes to dessert – the homemade ice-cream and crêpes in a brandy, orange and butter sauce are an absolute must!
You’re encouraged to bring your own wine – no corkage fee. There are also other refreshing beverages available, such as the sweet-tart lemon granita or the lemonade.
Alje, the owner, welcomes you at the front door and is the only one bringing food to the tables straight from the home’s kitchen, with the occasional greeting from the two Ridgeback residents. The limited number of tables allows for personal, friendly conversation. Note that it’s recommended booking months in advance if you’re planning a visit in December.
The smell of firewood smoke and baked bread fills the air of this quintessential country home. It’s an intimate setting and homely atmosphere, surrounded by trees. The verandah has a cosy fireplace and a view of the garden alongside a flowing river.
