Harvest Table Bistro at the Winterberg Inn in Wolseley is a welcome stop for the weary traveller, says Eat Out critic Pieter du Toit.
For most of the week the bistro is open for breakfast, lunch and supper. The owners Reint and Karien always have a few specials up their sleeves, and they will explain the dishes on arrival at your table. Their pizzas are excellent; they’re the reason many people come here. The Turkish pizza is a must: slow-cooked lamb and tzatziki with just enough feta to ensure satisfaction. The pizza base delights with both soft and crisp textures, and melts in the mouth when combined with the pulled lamb and tsatsiki. Also not to be missed are Karien’s pulled pork dishes and the burgers, or the home-cooked stew, which is usually hiding in the kitchen. The meats are cooked to perfection – only the best are in stock. Go for the fillet.
If you stay overnight, go for a brisk walk early in the morning and then sit down and demand the salmon and scrambled eggs breakfast, which is to die for. Truly, the breakfasts here are as good as the dinners.
Some local wines are served, as well as the Conradie’s Koelfontein series or David Nieuwoudt’s Cederberg wines from further beyond. There’s a tiny but well stocked bar.
Front-of-house Terri is always right there to assist, as friendly and helpful as they come.
Located in an old house right there at the end of Michell’s Pass (or is it the start?), the venue offers seating on the big stoep under the veranda. In winter, the fireplace inside never seems to go out. It’s the kind of place where the locals like to hang out.
Before dinner, enjoy a local beer or a glass of wine at the bar. In summer, you may be tempted to jump into the pool. And if the wine gets to you, ask for a room – they’re very affordable.
