I’m always keen for a pie. I’ve been researching the food trends predicted for 2011, and the pie is top of the list.  Savoury or sweet – they’re the new cupcake.

Pies are comfort food at its best. I really hope to see lots of pop-up shops brimming with pies next year. Most mornings, I head down the road to Jardine’s bakery for a coffee, and usually end up buying the pie of the day too: curried veg and lentil, macaroni cheese, or spicy Argentinean empanadas.

The deli at The Foodbarn in Noordhoek also sells great pies; think yummy slow-cooked beef in red wine and mushrooms encased in rich, buttery pastry. And when I’m in Joburg I head straight for The Patisserie in Illovo. Last but not least are Pete Goffe-Wood’s pies at the KC Canteen in Woodstock – creamy porcini mushrooms in a thick, old-fashioned crust, perfect!
