Good timing is on the side of the reopening of The Greenhouse Bar in Johannesburg. The country is on level one and the festive season is fast approaching, which means pulsating nightlife is on the cards again.
Keeping this in mind, the Greenhouse’s new space in Sandton is bigger, open with outdoor seating and ideally ventilated for social distancing and mitigating Covid-19 risks.
This openness is complemented by the abundant greenery of the décor with floral touches. The sophisticated tones of the jade-coloured marble, natural wood and pops of mustard yellow elevate the trendy, lush and plant-rich atmosphere.
Located on 24 Central, which also houses the nightclub Taboo and Solo restaurant, The Greenhouse adds to the vibrant synergy of the buzzing business complex. Aside from its party vibe that attracts top local musos and DJs, The Greenhouse is also best for lunch escapes from the office and customised private events.
The food is as exciting as the setting. Upgraded by head chef Carolina Rasenti of The Great Eastern Food Bar fame, the menu boasts Asian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean influences. Modern tapas dishes – such as the signature sushi, delicious salmon tacos or the succulent chimichurri chicken kebabs – are now supplemented by new grilled additions.
These include the vegetarian dish of whole grilled aubergines, drizzled with olive oil and tzatziki, as well as fresh salmon steak served with chargrilled broccolini. There are also some intriguing variations on their fresh oyster offerings, like the smoke-infused version.
“When I think of South Africa I’m instantly drawn to the taste and smell of cooking on an open flame. The updated Greenhouse menu draws on that authentic nostalgia,” says Carolina.
The dessert menu is small but irresistible with options like the pretty pistachio and rose baklava. A bar snack menu will also be launched to compliment the cocktail offerings and drinks.
“When going to a bar in South Africa, few customers give the food much thought. That is not the case at The Greenhouse. We are the full experience, from the perfectly poured drinks to delicious plates of Middle Eastern-inspired dishes, all to the sounds of Joburg’s best DJs. We have created a space that you will want to start and end your night in,” Carolina says.
The Greenhouse JHB is open Wednesdays to Sundays from 12pm to close.
