Your gourmet guide for where to eat on Second Avenue, Harfield Village

Brought to you by

Harfield Village is a quaint pocket of cottages and parks wedged between Claremont, Kenilworth and Wynberg in the Cape Town southern suburbs. The area has a great combination of older homes, leafy avenues and young families. Through the middle of Harfield Village runs Second Avenue, undoubtedly the heart and soul of drinking and dining in these parts. Here’s where and what you should be eating.

Second Avenue South

The south end of Second Avenue is situated near to Kenilworth train station. An ample parking area is encircled by a hub of vibrant restaurants and bars.

Banana Jam Café

This Caribbean-themed brewhouse, restaurant and outdoor cocktail bar is where the party is on a Friday night. The fruity, colourful cocktails are refreshing and go down very easily on a warm summer’s evening, especially when you’re sitting in the courtyard lit with string lights and filled with reggae music. Banana Jam also has a very extensive offering of beers on tap – some say one of the largest in the suburbs! It’s the perfect spot for a few rounds of drinks, sharing a pizza and catching up with friends.

Bardelli’s Pizza

Bardelli’s is renowned for its wood-fired pizza, but locals know to ask for the specials like the slow-braised lamb shank or oven-baked lasagne. The interior is cosy and warm while the service is friendly and functional. Don’t miss the Olympia pizza featuring different toppings on each quarter. Fully licensed, Bardelli’s Pizza also does takeaway pizzas for collection.

Punjabs

A recent arrival to the area, Punjabs has won over many loyal customers across its branches in Cape Town. The build-your-own tiffin for two is a great mid-week dinner option, and the tandoori chicken is very tasty – spicy and juicy. Bold flavours, fun interiors and a family atmosphere guarantee that you’ll soon become a regular.

Rare Grill

This multi-award-winning steakhouse is a true meat lover’s dream. With a small dining room, the restaurant is often packed to capacity, so be sure to book a table in advance. Owner Greg is often manning the grill, ensuring that each steak is grilled perfectly. The menu and wine list is compact, focusing on must-try special cuts from the butcher.

Second Avenue North

The few blocks in the direction of Claremont and Imam Haron Road is jam-packed with foodie options.

Brad’s Grill

The long-established steakhouse is a steady favourite with families looking for a classic steak dinner. The dining room is filled with vibrant chatter and the service is always warm.

Sea Grill by La Boheme

The freshest seafood is served in Harfield Village by this new branch of an old favourite – La Boheme in Sea Point. Fresh oysters and ice cold wine begin the meal before you move on to any of the grilled seafood dishes or pastas. The bar serves incredible gin cocktails if you’re looking for something different with your meal. Expect confident Mediterranean flavours.

Twigs with Beans

Here you’ll find the best flat white in the neighbourhood by far. This quaint coffee shop is great for an early-morning coffee before your trek to the office.

Zapata Mexican

It’s all about the margaritas by the jugful at Zapata. The food is packed with big, bold flavours and the generous portions are great for sharing with your crew. Like many spots in Harfield, the restaurant isn’t very large – but go for the cosy, brightly coloured interiors and the irresistible chilli poppers.

Special Mention

Oblivion

While not strictly on Second Avenue, this restaurant and bar is an institution in the area. After dinner, the lights go down and music is turned up for some enthusiastic dancing. The rooftop deck upstairs is a great place for a glass of wine, and the quiz night on winter Monday nights has been running for decades.
