Ginger and Fig owners to open a new Mexican restaurant in Pretoria later this year

For the many fans of Ginger and Fig, one of Pretoria’s favourite eateries, the fact that chef and owner Zane Figueiredo will be opening not one but two more establishments is sure to be brilliant news. Ginger and Fig have worked hard to change the food landscape in Pretoria by educating the palates of their clientele, and offering innovative, inspiring food and drink.

For years, the restaurant’s loyal following have been badgering Figueiredo to open more eateries – and he is finally taking that next step.

Towards the end of the year, you can expect to see a brand-new Mexican wave of flavour travelling through the east of Pretoria with the arrival of El Pistolero. The vision behind this project is one shared by Figueiredo and his business partner, Tiaan Liebenberg. The two are careful to describe the menu as authentic: while they’ll incorporate authentic Mexican ingredients, most of the dishes will have a classic Figueiredo spin to them. Expect a big focus on Mexican street food with tacos (made with home-made corn tortillas) being the main star. Fish tacos with tamarind and ancho-chilli paste, or pork and pineapple are some of the gems on the menu. As they are still waiting for their liquor licence, your thirst will be quenched by authentic aguas frescas (“cool waters”) and spiced clay-pot coffee. For something sweet, expect mind-blowing churros and las paletas (Mexican popsicles). The new space will be at Constantia Park and opening is slated for November 2015.

The other exciting addition to the Ginger and Fig brand is Two, an extension of the original establishment’s concept. Two, which will be located alongside El Pistolero at Constantia Park, will focus on the takeaway trade, with many of Ginger and Fig’s classics making an appearance. Expect sleek Scandinavian design with all the excellence that accompanies Figueiredo’s food. The team are aiming at late 2015 or early 2016.
