Inner-city eats: Where to dine in Gardens

Brought to you by

If you live in Gardens, you’re definitely spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out on the town. Here’s our pick for every mood you could find yourself in.

For breakfast

Manna Epicure

A chic spot with amazing breakfasts, served daily until 3pm right in the heart of Gardens. You can always judge a restaurant by its hollandaise sauce and oh boy, do they serve up a mean Eggs Benedict on a potato and wheat waffle stack with streaky bacon and lashings of luscious hollandaise. The menu – a tasty fusion between classic French and rustic South African cuisines –  covers all the basics. Do note that this isn’t only a breakfast spot, though – there’s a variety of delectable lunch, dinner and dessert options to keep you fuelled all day long.

Mucky Mary’s & The Bitch’s Tits at Yard

Expect something a little different at this local favourite. Mucky Mary’s serves up some seriously good grub, with an all-day breakfast menu featuring a must-try French toast stack. If you’re staying until lunch, have tacos at the Bitch’s Tits, and dinner means burgers at The Dog’s Bollocks or pizza at Pizza Warehouse. There’s also a fully functional bar, rounding it off as an all-in-one all-day foodie wonder.

For coffee

Cocoa Oola

This local corner coffee and breakfast spot brings something a little different to the breakfast offering, like with the refreshing low-carb coffee crush. In addition to having an extensive breakfast menu, Cocoa Oola boasts super friendly staff and a pets-allowed policy.

Molten Toffee

This quaint local gem serves up coffee, breakfasts and lunches. If you drive past too fast you might miss it, but the house-made cold brew is crisp, dark and delicious.

For lunch

The Company’s Garden Restaurant

Escape the inner-city madness by taking a peaceful stroll through the idyllic Company’s Garden. It’s a fun and interactive outing for the whole family to enjoy, meaning you’re sure to work up an appetite. Tuck into a variety of salads, a Cape Malay platter (samoosas, dhaaltjies and spring rolls) or fried fish and chips. Finish off with a slice of freshly baked cake.

Tamboers Winkel

The café-style menu here is complemented by a communal table in the centre of the room, so bring your charm along. The menu is fresh, fuss-free and comprises old-school favourites that are great for any occasion. The succulent rotisserie chicken is definitely a must-try. Be on the lookout for the evening wine tastings, and Thursdays are beer-and-burger nights.

For dinner

Maria’s Greek Café

Hidden away in bustling Dunkley Square, Maria’s serves up authentic Greek food done deliciously well. The restaurant is also super dog friendly, making for the ultimate family affair. The meze starter is a must and on the mains side of things, the signature lamb dish melts in your mouth. Don’t forget to leave space for dessert – the traditional Greek sweet treats will tempt any palate.

The Moveable Feast

Café by day, French bistro by night – The Moveable Feast offers a casual dining experience with true Parisian flare. Expect everything from moules gratinées (mussels with a crisp coating of cream cheese, garlic and breadcrumbs) to a classic tarte au citron. Even the bar bites have a delicious Parisian twist, like the croque monsieur (a cheese-and-ham toastie with béchamel sauce).

For special occasions

Black Sheep

Located in vibey Kloof Street, Black Sheep is a trendy spot with breathtakingly beautiful views of Table Mountain. If you don’t go for the views alone, the food is always outstanding. The menu changes daily, so be sure to check it out online beforehand. One constant is the amazing street-side bar, which is well stocked with cocktails, wine and local craft beers.

Meal

Janse & Co

Located in the middle of iconic Kloof Street, Janse & Co offers a casual fine-dining experience with an amazing tasting menu. The décor is stunning, and the menu is always changing as it focuses on fresh, seasonal and sustainable produce. It’s absolutely perfect for any special occasion.

For sundowners

The Dark Horse

The Dark Horse’s old-fashioned cocktails, local craft beers on tap and a stellar wine list keep any celebration festive. There’s also a mix of bar snacks on offer, just in case you get hungry. Munch on the likes of Cajun potato skins with chilli jam and a yoghurt dipping sauce.

The Power and the Glory

Usually bursting at the seams, this ultimate local hangout is great for rustic all-day drinking (complete with delicious pickleback shots!).

For dessert

Unframed Ice Cream

Unframed Ice Cream is definitely one for the books. (It’s even been voted the best ice-cream parlour in the world!) There’s always a variety of flavours on offer that are nearly impossible to choose from (the oh-so-moreish sea salt dark chocolate flavour is too good to be true), with vegan ones included. You’ll definitely find your reprieve from the summer heat here.
