South African celebrity chef Lentswe Bhengu-Mafoko has tragically passed away. Lentswe, whose death was announced on social media on Wednesday, was loved by many in the food industry and beyond.
Although Lentswe had a stellar career in the food space, he actually started in the finance industry, working for big names such as Old Mutual, Allan Gray, The Income Specialist and Wesgro. In 2010, Lentswe left it all behind to pursue his foodie dreams.
After graduating from The Culinary Academy in the Cape Winelands, he worked at top fine-dining restaurants such as The Roundhouse and Savoy Cabbage as well as for several catering companies across the country.

Lentswe then merged his in-depth business experience with his love for food to start a film and media production house called Green Zebra Productions. Along with his business partner, he launched South Africa’s first food web series called Africa on a Plate.
Other notable moments include becoming co-presenter of the iconic show The Great South African Bake Off and working as a judge on the KFC Taste Kitchen, a cooking competition show.
In addition, Lentswe acted as the local ambassador of the ‘Chefs who share – Young Chef Award’, an award that recognises upcoming and talented chefs.
Tributes for Lentswe have poured in, with his loved ones and fans noting not only his passion for food but also his kindness and humility.
