5 great hot cross bun treats in Cape Town

Easter weekend is upon us and that means foodies everywhere are warming up their toasters for their sweet and spicy hot cross bun fix. They’re traditionally eaten on Good Friday, but thanks to their popularity they’re now sold all year round by certain retailers. Having picked up on that popularity, eateries around Cape Town are busy whipping up some epic hot cross bun creations to kick start the Easter feast. Here are five spots getting creative with hot cross buns in the Mother City.

Foxcroft (Constantia)

La Colombe’s Scot Kirton and talented pastry chef Glen Williams are keeping things deliciously on theme this Easter weekend with their dainty hot cross bun macarons. These little mouthfuls are made with a crisp almond shell and a hint of spice then filled with a hot-cross-bun-and-white chocolate ganache. They’re also served with candied citrus peel and sultanas. Perfect to take home or enjoy at the restaurant.

Honest Chocolate (City Bowl)

Prefer chocolate to raisins? Never fear, Cape Town’s popular chocolate bar has got you covered with their freshly baked hot cross buns. They’re made with choc chips and best served warm with a pat of butter and a side of rich hot chocolate. We suggest you take some home for the rest of the family to enjoy over the weekend.

Jason Bakery (City Bowl)

Captain Bread is back with his (incredibly delicious) annual hot cross buns. The bakery will be closed on Saturday and Monday, so you will need to stock up before your Easter feasting begins. If you want to do something a little less traditional for your Good Friday brekkie, head here for the Hot Cross Bomb. This baby is comprised of Jason’s famous hot cross buns, a poached egg, bacon and emmental cheese.

Max Bagels (City Bowl)

The bagel masters are changing things up for the Easter weekend with their take on hot cross buns. Their golden rings have received a festive makeover, resulting in a bagel-and-hot-cross-bun hybrid. Grab one to go and ask for butter or a shmear of chocolate spread from Honest Chocolate. Excellent with a coffee.

Kristen’s Kickass Ice Cream (Noordhoek)

Craving a scoop of ice cream? Head to this busy little farm village with the family and make a beeline for Kristen’s Kickass Ice Cream shop for a scoop of Easter in a cone. Known for concocting ice cream creations that are reminiscent of childhood treats, Kristen is now adding toasted hot cross buns to her repertoire. The ice cream is dotted with the buns that were steeped in cream and spruced up with nutmeg and plump cinnamon raisins. Get yours in a cone or cup and enjoy.
