If you’ve been following Eat Out closely in the last few months, you’ll know that there’s been a serious surge of new vegan restaurants sprouting up all over the Mother City. Check out our comprehensive list here. Fresh on the plant-based scene is Grumpy & Runt, serving up vegan twists on deli favourites from the new space in Dunkley Square in Gardens, Cape Town.

The new vegan spot is serving up daytime eats like the “Reubenesque” sandwich with pastrami-style, housemade seitan on rye with sauerkraut, Russian dressing, slices of dill pickle and housemade vegan cheese, a tofu banh-mi complete with all the trimmings or the Not-Chicken maYOH sarmie that’s made with a housemade chicken-style seitan. They also specialise in decadent vegan doughnuts with creations like the Boston Creme version stuffed with the whipped coconut cream and topped with chocolate, or the pistachio and rosewater flavour.
